nPower Championship: Huddersfield Town

Last season in League One saw a classic 4-4 at Hillsborough with the now departed Jordan Rhodes causing Wednesday all sorts of problems, but it was a 0-2 win for the Owls at the Galpharm Stadium (now renamed the John Smiths Stadium) that helped Wednesday achieve promotion. Huddersfield themselves reached the Championship with a record busting penalty shoot out victory over Sheffield United, winning 8-7. After two successive draws, the Terriers were hoping to get back to winning ways against a resurgent Sheffield Wednesday.

nPower Championship: Bolton Wanderers

Boxing Day, and a trip to Greater Manchester for Sheffield Wednesday to face Bolton Wanderers at The Reebok Stadium. Last season saw Bolton finish 18th in the Premier League and the Trotters are aiming for a quick return to the top flight, whilst Wednesday are hoping to put distance between themselves and a return to League One - so the battle for 3 points here would be a tough one.

Saturday, 22 December 2012

nPower Championship: Charlton Athletic FC

In the last match before Christmas, Hillsborough played host to Charlton Athletic who look to bounce back from a 0-2 loss to Bolton in their last outing. Wednesday were hoping for back to back wins after their victory in the South Yorkshire derby against Barnsley. Last seasons League One champions and runners-up were hoping to give their fans a 3-point Christmas present.

Sunday, 16 December 2012

nPower Championship: Barnsley FC

This South Yorkshire derby comes with both teams in desperate need of points, having dropped into the relegation zone. With the 2 teams having scored the leagues least amount of goals, fans were wondering where the next win will come from. Managers Keith Hill and Dave Jones are reportedly clinging to their jobs and 3 points against a rival will help them no end.

Sunday, 9 December 2012

nPower Championship: Bristol City

Mounting pressure on manager Dave Jones had a chance to be put aside with the visit of fellow strugglers Bristol City at Hillsborough. The Robins themselves eager to climb out of the leagues early relegation zone and climb the Championship table.

Monday, 3 December 2012

nPower Championship: Cardiff City

It comes as no great surprise to see the Bluebirds flying high in the league and with the visit of struggling Sheffield Wednesday, Cardiff City had a good chance to make it 10 home wins out of 10 this season. Dave Jones made his return to the Cardiff City Stadium to a respective reception from the home fans, but it was his own teams fans that he now needs to win over following a string of poor results.

Wednesday, 28 November 2012

nPower Championship: Watford FC

A bitterly cold Hillsborough welcomed a Watford team that knew if they left with all 3 points, they would be in a playoff position - whilst the Owls were hoping to avoid a fifth consecutive defeat and another drop into the bottom 3.

Sunday, 25 November 2012

nPower Championship: Leicester City

Promotion chasing Leicester headed to Hillsborough with some familiar faces in their ranks. Manager Nigel Pearson, the last SWFC captain to raise a trophy, Ben Marshall - a fans favourite during his loan stint and Jamie Vardy, a Wednesdayite released by SWFC before his rise to Championship football from non-league obscurity.

Sunday, 18 November 2012

nPower Championship: Nottingham Forest

A fantastic spectacle of fan appreciation took place at the City Ground when Forest hosted the Owls. As 4,405 Wednesday fans filled the away end, it was clear to see the love the fans have of the midfield enforcer Jose Semedo. Masks, green & maroon balloons, inflatables and numerous Portuguese flags filled the stand as 'Semedo Day' was in full swing.

Remembrance Day. 11/11/2012

A brief poem I've written for today. Wear your Poppy's with pride. Never forget.

Lest we forget the fallen heroes.
Lest we forget the bravery they showed.
We have our today,
For they gave their tomorrow's.
Lest we forget the lengths they did go.

Fallen, yes - but forgotten, no.

Saturday, 10 November 2012

nPower Championship: Middlesborough FC

The Owls travel to the tip of North Yorkshire to face the in-form Middlesborough, with a near sell-out stadium and the biggest attendance at the Riverside Stadium since Manchester United visited in 2009. If Middlesborough win they climb to the summit of English footballs second tier. An impeccable 2min silence of remembrance preceded the opening whistle.

Wednesday, 7 November 2012

nPower Championship: Blackpool FC

An enticing match was set for Hillsborough when the Tangerines arrived on Tuesday evening. Manager-less, after Ian Holloway departed for Crystal Palace, but with talent throughout the team. Could Wednesday make it 3 wins out of 3?

Sunday, 4 November 2012

nPower Championship: Peterborough Utd

Sheffield Wednesday welcome fellow bottom 3 side, Peterborough United to Hillsborough where the Owls are without a win since August. All 3 points for either side would see them climb away from the early season relegation zone.

nPower Championship: Ipswich Town

With only 12 games on the board, both teams meeting at Portman Road needed all 3 points at the final whistle as both clubs languish in the early relegation zone. Ipswich, acting on their alarming start by parting ways with manager (and ex-Wednesday boss) Paul Jewell, start at the foot of the table.

Thursday, 25 October 2012

nPower Championship: Blackburn Rovers

With the Owls in desperate need of 3 points a trip to Ewood Park would prove to be a tough test. Hosting Premier League football last season shows the calibre of Sheffield Wednesdays opposition for the evening kick off.

Saturday, 20 October 2012

nPower Championship: Leeds United

The pre-match banter started early between rival fans as the derby game drew closer, welcoming league football back after the international break. The term 'your clubs Cup Final' was banded out frequently and the scene was set for a dramatic 90 minutes of Yorkshire football. With the added spice of a Sheffield United contingent in the Leeds side with Warnock, Tonge, Kenny and Brown, the atmosphere was sure to be intense.

Sunday, 7 October 2012

nPower Championship: Hull City

The visit of Hull to Hillsborough would always be a tough game but Wednesday had a new belief about them, a product of achieving a 3-3 draw in their last outing against Burnley. Hull themselves were not getting the right results so the scene was set for a good match - both teams out to prove a point.

Wednesday, 3 October 2012

nPower Championship: Burnley FC

The first meeting in over 3 years between these two sides was almost guaranteed goals with recent performances. Both sets of defences were under scrutiny as goals were leaking at an alarming rate. The previous encounter at Turf Moor between the Clarets & Owls ended as a 2-4 win for Wednesday, in February 2009.

Sunday, 30 September 2012

nPower Championship: Wolverhampton Wanderers

Just before kick-off, the opening chant became a sing-off between the 2 sets of fans as Wanderers & Wednesdayites each gave their version of 'HI HO SILVER LINING' at full volume.

The first action of the game came with barely 90 seconds on the clock as a trademark Michail Antonio run saw him upended in the box unfairly, as Antonio bounced back up to regain control and fire a shot off, screams for a penalty were waved away by the referee.

Wednesday, 26 September 2012

Capital One Cup (r3): Southampton FC

A trip to the south coast for this Third Round tie between the Premierships Southampton and the Owls at St Mary's. Both teams were changed from their previous league games, with the hosts making 9 changes and Wednesday making 7 since their weekend defeat against Bolton.

The bright yellow clad visitors had a stern test ahead of them and the home side made their intentions known straight from the kick off.

Saturday, 22 September 2012

nPower Championship: Bolton Wanderers

There was an air of caution around for the visit of Bolton Wanderers to Hillsborough, as Wednesday were on a losing streak and the visitors would prove difficult to overcome. After losing in midweek to Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield, the Owls were in need of a point at least against a team they haven't faced in 11 years.

Friday, 21 September 2012

nPower Championship: Huddersfield Town

A sign of respect was impeccably observed by both sets of fans before kick-off as a minutes silence was held in respect and memory of the 96 victims of the Hillsborough Disaster, a tradegy at Sheffield Wednesdays home stadium. Recent deaths of 2 soldiers serving in the Yorkshire Regiment were also honoured in the silence, one of which was a Huddersfield Town fan.

Now, with BBC Radio Sheffield live at Hillsborough and the Chelsea v Juventus match muted on TV, I was all set for an evening of football bliss and to top it off, the takeaway arrived just before kick off!

Saturday, 15 September 2012

nPower Championship: Brighton & Hove Albion

Build up to this fixture was full of caution and most fans were predicting a share of the points. Wednesday signed star-prospect Ross Barkley from Everton on a months loan going into the match.

The fantastic Amex Stadium plays host to this match, down on the South coast giving travelling Wednesday fans a day at the beach before what was to be a tough test in the evening.

At the time of the first whistle, the Owls were sitting in 6th place and the first thing that I notice is the incredible noise being generated by both sets of fans.

Saturday, 1 September 2012

nPower Championship: Crystal Palace

Selhurst Park was to be the Owls first stop since the closing of the transfer window, after late additions to the squad in the form of Jay Bothroyd and Martin Taylor - neither making the starting lineup (Taylor was on the bench).

Straight from the referees whistle Crystal Palace made their intentions clear, bearing down on Chris Kirkland's area - Zaha taking the ball on a lightening paced run, passing to Bolasi who in turn provided a cross to Glenn Murray, leaving the striker to slot home from 4 yards out. 30 seconds on the clock and the Owls were 1-0 down.

Tuesday, 28 August 2012

Capital One Cup: Fulham FC

A surprising transfer happened in the build up to this game, as Diogo Amado who only signed last month, was sold to Portuguese Primeira Liga side Estoril Praia Futebol. Home sickness being the reason given.

As the teams were announced one thing was for certain, Fulham were taking Wednesday seriously, naming a first 11 regularly seen in the Premier League. The Owls also fielded a strong line-up, including the fit again Gary Madine. So, to the action...

Sunday, 26 August 2012

nPower Championship: Millwall FC

The highest Championship crowd of the day witnessed a game that again showed the Owls' determination and 'comebackability'.

The ever-improving Jermaine Johnson started with a performance that will strike fear into all Championship defences, concluding his mazy run with a rocket of a right-footed strike, flying past the keeper and opening the scoring for the day.

Tuesday, 21 August 2012

nPower Championship: Birmingham City

Well there's only one place to start today isn't there - a certain Barcelona B player, Rodri, signing for the Owls on a season long loan, with the a purchase option at the end. Yes, you read that correctly. Read it again! Oh how things change, Dave Jones really does have global connections.

Now, to the game.

Birmingham City come to Hillsborough for the Owls first home game of the Championship season. Pre - match I was happy if we were to end the 90mins with a point, as the visiting Blues have a Premiership pedigree and a strong side that will undoubtedly do well this season.

nPower Championship: Derby County

Here it is, finally. The start of the new campaign in a higher division. The nPower Championship welcomes the Blue & White of Sheffield Wednesday. Teams can expect a 'massive' following at their grounds, with a full voice Wednesday-faithful army behind the team.

Pride Park: Derby County

Friday, 17 August 2012

Capital One Cup: Oldham Athletic

 Oldham Athletic v SWFC:

Fortunately for us armchair supporters, Sky Sports decided this fixture would be televised - and what a great decision it was! The build up was full of hugely optimistic tweets and texts about a resounding Wednesday win. By half time, we were desperate not to be crashing at the first hurdle.

Now all Wednesdayite's know that when we are on TV, we tend to under perform - the dreaded 'Sky Curse'.

Pre-season 2012/2013

After the high of a sold out Hillsborough witnessing a fantastic promotion clinching game against Wycombe Wanderers FC, the fans were treated to a holiday in Portugal for the Pre-season work out that would prepare the team for the Championship.

Introduction

This blog contains the views of me, a Sheffield Wednesday armchair supporter! I don't attend matches week in, week out - I'm not one of the travelling 'massive' that invade countless away grounds. It doesn't stop me having my views on the club I have supported for over 20 years though. I don't mind being told by other Wednesdayite's that I'm not a real fan for my lack of money going through the turnstiles, if that makes them feel all high and mighty then so be it. When my opinion gets discarded for it though, that's when I get defensive - and I'm sure it's the same for others not able to plough money into the club they love... afterall - We're All Wednesday Aren't We?

I'm a regular on Twitter (@SE_MJS) and I have to say, there's some vile Wednesday fans on there. Shoving it down fans' throats that they attend every home and away game so they are the cream of the crop as far as Wednesday fans are concerned. Now, don't get me wrong - I admire their dedication being able to do that, but when you start being abusive towards people that aren't able to do that then you quickly lower yourself in my estimations. The words "When you go to as many games as me, then I'll listen to you" are the type that frequently get typed by many of these people. *Unfollow*. Opinions are what make the game we love, greater. As diverse as some are, they all count and all make for an interesting read. This is the blog of one of the so called Armchair Supporters, I hope you enjoy!
