Capital One Cup: Oldham Athletic

 Oldham Athletic v SWFC:

Fortunately for us armchair supporters, Sky Sports decided this fixture would be televised - and what a great decision it was! The build up was full of hugely optimistic tweets and texts about a resounding Wednesday win. By half time, we were desperate not to be crashing at the first hurdle.

Now all Wednesdayite's know that when we are on TV, we tend to under perform - the dreaded 'Sky Curse'.
This seemed to be in full swing by the 7th minute when 3'474 fans saw Oldham take the lead with a tidy finish from ex-Blade Jordan Slew. The 27th minute then produced the games second goal, this one by Mvoto after what turned out to be a good solid tackle on Michail Antonio out on the wing. When a foul on the same man lead to a late Wednesday penalty - new signing Pecnik stepped up, hoping to put a poor 1st half performance behind him. Whistle. Step-up.... Simonson-esque!! Over the bar. 2-0 down, against lower league opposition ... on TV. The Sky Curse was all over this one. Or so we thought. A half time right royal rollocking from Dave Jones saw Wednesday come to life in the second half - with a quick reaction strike from the ex-Oldham loanee, Jermaine Johnson. A man trying to keep a place at the Owls, Chris O'Grady, had come onto the field and was up top in place of the injured Madine (knee) and Maguire (ribs) and he took his moment to shine - goals in the 62nd & 70th minute finally putting the Owls ahead with all the momentum. Crucially, Pecnik had woken up and was playing a blinder after being moved higher up the pitch. There was just one more thing the Owls fans wanted, a debut goal from the £1m signing Antonio. He obliged with a beauty! From the left wing, he cut inside and bent a rocket passed the keeper from around 20 yards out. Undoubtedly Chris Kirkland kept the Owls (playing in their new bright yellow away kit) in the game with a string of top level saves.

Final result: 2-4
Attendance: 3'474
Man of the match (Sky): Chris O'Grady

As a side-note, take a look at my HT tweet posted when we were 2-0 down and playing poorly ....
