Pre-season 2012/2013

After the high of a sold out Hillsborough witnessing a fantastic promotion clinching game against Wycombe Wanderers FC, the fans were treated to a holiday in Portugal for the Pre-season work out that would prepare the team for the Championship.

First of all came a short trip to Sheffield FC where an attendance of 1,342 saw a Chris O'Grady goal cancelled out in the 75th minute with the match ending 1-1. The build up to this match was dominated by an ex-player of that other team in Sheffield, you know - the team in League One, who took to Twitter to throw insults at Wednesdayite's. Very professional of Sheffield FC's manager (club distanced themselves from his comments afterwards). A decent start to Pre-season.

On the same evening Stocksbridge Park Steels played host to another Wednesday XI, which ended as a 0-4 win to the Owls, with new signing Chris Maguire ending with a double on the night. An attendance of 1,820 witnessed the game which also saw the Goal Machine, Gary Madine hitting the back of the net.

The Estadio Municipal de Albufeira then played host to a giant of the Portuguese League, Sporting Lisbon taking on The Owls, with just over 3000 in attendance. Word came through that Reading FC's chairman was also in Portugal (Reading were on Pre season there too) and with the ongoing saga over the transfer of Michail Antonio, Wednesdayite's expected a resolution quickly. The game itself was a scrappy one but Sportings quality shone through. As an armchair supporter I didn't travel to Portugal (shock, horror!) but watched the game online. Was great to see SWFC lining up against a giant of the game. Sporting ran out 2-0 winners in the end.

The same stadium then witnessed Reading vs SWFC - with the travelling Wednesdayite's in full voice, taking over Radio Berkshire (broadcasting the game) with fake news of Antonios signing and songs ever present at Hillsborough. Wednesday finished the game as 0-2 winners ... even with Antonio playing against us!

Doncaster Rovers' Keepmoat then housed an attendance of 5,929 to see a 0-0 draw played out.

WBA then visited Hillsborough in our only home game, bringing in 6,805 only to see a late Peter Odemwingie goal cancel out a great performance that saw new signing Pecnik score for the Owls.

A trip to Scotland was the final leg of the Owls Pre - season and 2,064 fans saw Sheffields number 1 team run out 1-4 winners, with trialist Marlon Harewood bagging a hattrick as he battled to earn a contract.

As an armchair fan I didn't attend any of these matches, although I was going to attend the WBA match, but only one person would attend with me (a Leeds fan!) & he ended up being called into work. Other armchair fans will undoubtedly agree that Radio Sheffield, Sky Sports News and the numerous Twitter feeds are vital to us in hearing any snippets of the game (or reading tweets about it).

So a quick message to the attendees - keep tweeting, WE NEED YOU!!!
